Night of the Arts events for young children in the downtown area
Updated 22.8.2017The Night of the Arts takes over Helsinki for the 29th time on Thursday, August 24, 2017. Small Helsinki lists child-friendly activity tips for children under school age at this classic event. Part two presents children’s events organized in downtown and central Helsinki and suggests where to go with little ones. Entry to the events is free unless otherwise stated. During the Night of the Arts, many Helsinki museums offer free admission.

Leena Suomi exaggerates a portrait of you in just a few minutes. Come be a model! You don't have to buy the drawings, but you can take your work for ten euros. The program is weather dependent. The Secret Garden enchants again on the Night of the Arts – even bigger and with new paths! Taking over Senate Square's prime location, this lush green oasis brings a touch of historical gardens' spirit to August Helsinki, along with picnic vibes and whispers of secret summer romances. You can visit the Secret Garden with the whole family or get lost in the atmosphere for a longer time as the midsummer evening darkens around you. In different corners of the Secret Garden you might encounter human statues, voguers, poets, fairy godmothers, cheerleaders, or perhaps even a circus string quartet. As evening falls, lights come on and Senate Square dances to the rhythm of a DJ and live music. Cable Factory, Tallberginkatu 1, Ruoholahti Cable Factory's Night of the Arts 5 PM - 9 PM
Finland's largest cultural center, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, again offers diverse programming on the Night of the Arts for all ages. In honor of the celebration, there's even more program offerings than before. Organizations working at the Cable Factory share their best samples: enter through open doors, see various performances, hear echoes of history on the Cable Factory Tour, dive into video installations, participate in workshops, visit art exhibitions and museums. You can also explore the Cable Factory's living filmography, eat traditional Finnish rye bread, visit the Poet's Office Hours, learn to dance, hug a mole or simply enjoy the atmosphere! - All Cable Factory museums have open doors and orienteering challenges. The theatres operating at the Cable Factory include the Theatre Museum, Finnish Museum of Photography, and Hotel and Restaurant Museum.

Book Studio (Slaughterhouse Area), Työpajankatu 2 Wonderful Wandering Adventures 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
The Book Studio's exhibition features illustrations by Jussi Karjalainen for the children's novel Little Brother and the Wonderful Adventure created with Leena Parkkinen. On the Night of the Arts on August 24, authors Jussi Karjalainen and Leena Parkkinen will lead a mask-making workshop. The workshop is part of Poetry Month programming.Annantalo, Annankatu 30 Annantalo's Night of the Arts
Children's Culture Centre Annantalo participates in the Night of the Arts and offers art experiences for families' youngest members. Little Kkakku's story time 4 PM - 5 PM and balloon and hat workshop 5 PM - 7:30 PM. Stage A will host Cultural Sisters' movie night starting at 6 PM. On the Night of the Arts you can also visit the Little Kkakku celebration exhibition. Read more about the exhibition here.Loiske Ensemble’s BabyTango performance for babies and toddlers combines a performance experience designed for babies with a shared dance moment for babies and their companions. BabyTango is a moment of interaction and love. Performances at 5 PM and 6:30 PM. BabyTango tickets are distributed on site starting at 4 PM.
Architecture Firm Kanttia2, Korkeavuorenkatu 30 Candy Architecture Workshop 4 PM - 8 PM
Architecture Firm Kanttia2 organizes every child and adult's dream: a Candy Architecture workshop in their offices on Korkeavuorenkatu. In this happiness-inducing workshop, candy and cauliflower artworks will be created all evening long. The event is suitable for all ages interested in building. Samba School Império do Papagaio's percussion group (drum band) and dancers invite the audience to experience carnival samba. Known as the street's opera, samba is meant to be performed outdoors and now culture-hungry audiences have the opportunity to play and dance samba themselves. The event has a weather contingency as drums don't appreciate rain. Earplugs are recommended for the more sensitive. In addition to the Press Museum's wonderful Five Wonderful Treasures exhibition, the museum also features a Poetry Path workshop for children led by illustrator Maija Hurmee on the Night of the Arts. The workshop is in Finnish, Swedish, and English. Parents will be entertained by Kalevauva.fi, whose lyrics are based on internet forum posts. Camilla's café sells treats at the museum all evening. Free admission to the museum 4 PM - 9 PM. Diverse programming for all ages both inside the museum and in its courtyard. Now is your chance to enter Stockmann's children's Christmas window display at the corner of Aleksi and Keskuskatu. On the Night of the Arts, the display window features a fun animal balloon craft workshop for children 2 PM - 6 PM, where balloons get silly animal faces. Access to the display window is through the revolving door of the Keskuskatu entrance, which is located next to the display window. Klockan 17 börjar föreställningen Adjö, Herr muffin. En morgon orkar inte Herr Muffin gå upp, det gör ont i magen och benen. I Skottes Musikteaters föreställning får barnen bekanta sig med Herr Muffin som tänker tillbaka på livet han levt, men även höra oro och sorg från den lilla flickan som kallar Herr Muffin för sin. En finstämd och kärleksfull berättelse om livet och döden med nykomponerad musik och poetiska sånger. Föreställningen är cirka 30 minuter. Efter föreställningen får barnen göra egna smycken tillsammans Project Liv rf. som vill införa mera glädje och trygghet i långtidssjuka barns vardag.Tillställningen är kostnadsfri men det finns ett begränsat antal biljetter till tillställningen, vilka kan hämtas på Luckan i Helsingfors eller bokas via [email protected].
