What is Helsinki's best playground? Where can you find a play park suitable for older children? Or a playground close to the city center? Helsinki has over 200 playgrounds and more than 60 play parks. But do you know where one of Helsinki's newest playgrounds is located?
Loviseholmin playground in Sompasaari has been familiar from newspaper headlines, as the construction costs of the swing-themed play park sparked lively discussion even before the playground's completion. After all, a swing that cost over 270,000 euros is definitely worth seeing! The playground was completed in July 2024.
Situated a short walk from Kalasatama metro station, on the Sompasaari side, Loviseholminpark charms visitors with beautiful flower plantings and Kirsi Kaulanen's Mare mare artwork in the center of the park. The yellow swing shines from afar, so the playground is easy to find. And there it is, Helsinki's and perhaps the world's most expensive swing!
Around the giant yellow framework, nine different swings have been placed: there are traditional swings, a baby swing, a swing for a child and parent together, a basket swing, a spinning whirl swing, and so on. Some of the swings are on the fenced side. A light traffic pathway runs through the swing structure, where you can also cycle, so the placement causes some wonder. There are no other play equipment in this park, so all activity is based on swinging and waiting in line for swings.
The swing structure is impressive. However, the relatively small total number of swings is puzzling, as the frame clearly has space for more swings. Since not all swings suit all ages, playing at Loviseholminpark largely involves waiting for your turn.
Loviseholminpark is certainly nice for local residents and the park as a whole is worth seeing. However, in terms of play experience, the playground experience is quite limited.
