Museum Experiences in Helsinki and Surrounding Area

For those looking for indoor activities and on rainy days, many museums in Helsinki and the surrounding area are excellent places to spend time and experience something new. Many museums have thoughtfully accommodated young visitors, and for example, you can move around with strollers and carriages in the exhibitions. Many museums also have quite functional care rooms as well as places to eat packed lunches.

Please note that many museums are closed on Mondays! However, not the Helsinki City Museum, Tram Museum, Merkki, TAHTO, and Amos Rex (Amos Rex is closed on Tuesdays).

Tamminiemi in Meilahti, right next to Seurasaari, is the home of presidents and is now a house museum. It's not the first place that comes to mind when thinking about museum destinations for kids, but we decided to try it anyway. And it was worth it, because the house museum appealed to the kids too.

Right next to the Central Railway Station, in the middle of Kaisaniemi Park, you'll find an incredibly wonderful place that's absolutely worth visiting with children too. We visited Kaisaniemi Botanical Garden on a spring Saturday with my almost five-year-old museum buddy, since we've so often wondered about and admired the giant water lilies that even appear in the Hooray Helsinki! book. And we saw them!

My Museum Friend and I: Exhibition tip to Päivälehden Museum – The Tiitiäisen aika exhibition built around Kirsi Kunnas's poems.

On 20.5.2022, Päivälehden Museum opened Tiitiäisen aika – an exhibition for children built around the beloved poems and children's books by poet and children's author Kirsi Kunnas, where visitors adventure through the magical worlds of Kunnas's poems and book illustrations.

The Tiitiäisen aika exhibition is full of beautiful colors, fun characters,
interesting shapes and of course Kirsi Kunnas's poems and nursery rhymes.

Tiitiäisen aika exhibition at Päivälehden Museum 20.5.-30.10.2022.

The first impression upon entering Päivälehden Museum is one of beautiful colors, interesting characters and shapes, telephone receiver handsets hanging from the ceiling, and a winding path through the exhibition. My museum friend immediately asked in the foyer what kind of magical world this was. And indeed, we found ourselves in the middle of the world of Tiitiäinen, Lillukka Lilli, Ovela Olli, Cat Krumeluun, Forest Giant, Ville, and Valli and dozens of other characters familiar from Kirsi Kunnas's nursery rhymes and poems. The exhibition had just opened to the public just before our visit, and my companion had the honor of being among the first child visitors to the Tiitiäisen aika exhibition.

Håkansbölen Manor: The Manor of Koiramäki Exhibition 7.5.–11.9.2022

My Museum Friend and I: An exhibition tip to the world of familiar characters from Mauri Kunnas's Koiramäki and a wonderful manor setting in Vantaa, at Håkansbölen Manor. The Manor of Koiramäki exhibition is open on summer weekends only, on Saturdays and Sundays from 7.5.–11.9.2022.

On the Vantaa side from Hakunila, near Vantaa's Ikea, you'll find a wonderful old Håkansbölen Manor area in the middle of fields. We've passed this place hundreds of times without knowing what a beautiful manor setting exists here. And that in the summer of 2022 you can find a delightful exhibition for children in an old stable and bakehouse. The Manor of Koiramäki exhibition has free admission and is run by the City Museum of Vantaa.

It's very easy to walk past the Newspaper Museum without realizing what a fun museum is behind those large windows! The museum's spring 2021 interactive themed exhibition takes visitors into the world of Donald Duck and reading.

The Newspaper Museum, just a couple of blocks away from Esplanade, brought in its usual manner an interactive exhibition suitable for children in spring, when Donald Duck and friends took over one corner of the museum. Celebrating Reading! Donald Duck magazine in Finland 70 years! exhibition invites adventure to Duckburg, peeks into Bear Cottage, Uncle Scrooge's office, Gyro Gearloose's workshop, and zooms around the nephews' car track.

The Pekka Töpöhäntä exhibition ended on 15.9.2019.
It's very easy to walk past Päivälehden Museum without noticing what a wonderful museum is behind its windows! The spring 2019 new exhibition at this museum, maintained by the Helsinki Newspaper Foundation, takes visitors to Uppsala and Pekka Töpöhäntä's adventures.

Päivälehden Museum has been transformed into Pekka Töpöhäntä's world.

The spring 2019 new exhibition at Päivälehden Museum takes children and the young at heart on an adventure into Pekka Töpöhäntä's world. The interactive exhibition celebrates Gösta Knutsson's famous cat character turning 80 years old and the cat's many friends. The exhibition is on display at Päivälehden Museum from 15.3 to 15.9.2019 and admission to the museum is always free.

To the Museum During Winter Break Week 2019

During week 8, museums in Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa offer plenty of experiences and activities for children.
However, please note that many museums are closed on Mondays.

At the Ateneum a winter break workshop is held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, 11 am-2 pm. The workshop is recommended for children over 3 years old. Museum admission applies; children under 18 free; museum card venue.

At the Design Museum winter break activities daily from Tuesday to Friday, February 19–23, 2019, 2-4 pm in the Design Museum studio. Museum admission applies; children under 18 free; museum card venue.

My Museum Buddy and I: Amos Rex at Lasippalatsi

The Amos Rex museum opening at Lasipalalsi on Thursday, August 30th invited younger museum visitors to get acquainted with the brand new museum in advance. This time, my toddler museum buddy and I enjoyed the anticipation, and we got to see something unprecedented.

Amos Rex is currently best known for the stone cockerels that have given Lasipalalsi’s square a new look, and the most adventurous ones can even peek into the museum. We tried climbing the cockerels a few weeks ago with two little ones, but a word of warning is in order: the fun-looking lumps are actually really steep. For older children, the place is definitely an experience, but with younger kids, caution is certainly warranted. It’s worth seeing in any case, so it’s worth stopping by just to wonder at it.

The exhibition has ended! The National Museum's pink venture, the major Barbie - The Icon - special exhibition, is on display for a few more weeks until 26.8.2018. My museum buddy and I stopped by to escape the heat and marvel at Barbie's wonderful world.

HAM Helsinki on the second floor of the Tennis Palace is actually quite an easy and convenient museum destination for children: since there's plenty of other things to marvel at in the Tennis Palace and HAM offers interesting exhibitions in an accessible environment.

The Graffiti exhibition has ended.

Museum Buddy and I in Espoo: Toy Museum Horseshoe

In Espoo, more precisely in Tapiola, on the second floor of the WeeGee exhibition center, you'll find children's dream museum: Toy Museum Horseshoe. A museum where you can play and be a child, but which also offers a glimpse into the history of toys and nostalgia for adults. This place is one of the Little Helsinki team's rainy day saviors – for example, on weekdays there's often a pleasantly calm atmosphere for little ones to play. For this reason, and thanks to the West Metro, Horseshoe becomes part of Little Helsinki's museum series, even though it's located in a neighboring city.

The Pelle Peloton exhibition has ended! It's very easy to walk past the Newspaper Museum without noticing what a wonderful museum is behind the glass windows! The museum, run by the Helsinki Newspaper Foundation, showcases media history, the present day and future, as well as freedom of the press in its permanent exhibitions. The exhibitions also feature various machines and equipment from the media field, and these are definitely worth puzzling over with children. Apparently, the telephone was a cash register...

It’s very easy to walk past the Daily Paper Museum without realizing what a wonderful museum lies behind those glass windows! Maintained by the Helsinki Newspaper Foundation, the museum showcases the history, present day and future of media, as well as freedom of speech in its permanent exhibitions. The exhibitions also feature various machines and devices from the media field, and it’s worth trying to guess what they are with children. Apparently, a rotary phone was once a cash register…

In the hallway, museum visitors are greeted by a large tarantula and poison spiders live in the building's structures. Now we're in a truly exciting place!

There is much to wonder about at the Museum of Natural History.

The University of Helsinki's Museum of Natural History in Etu-Töölö underwent a complete renovation a few years ago and is now an extremely impressive and interesting whole. Although the themes have remained largely the same, the new look presents the collection even better and more interestingly. The renovation has also brought additional functionality and children are well considered here. The Museum of Natural History operates together with other LUOMUS sites: the Kaisaniemi and Kumpula botanical gardens and the Museum of Natural History together form the Central Museum of Natural Sciences.

National Museum and the Attic

The National Museum's Attic was permanently closed in spring 2020, and a new event space will open in the location in August 2020. All of the National Museum's exhibitions have been designed to be child-friendly, so it's worth visiting the museum despite the Attic's closure.
