The renovated Mellunmäki Playground was an absolutely wonderful surprise, and the park made it straight to the Small Helsinki team's Top-5 playground list in Helsinki on the very first visit!

At the time of the visit, the playground was not yet fully complete: work on the other end of the yard and the playground building was still ongoing, and for example the lamp posts were not yet installed throughout the park. However, this didn't bother us, as the playground already offered plenty to do and completely new elements by Helsinki standards.

The playground has been renovated with mostly wooden play equipment from Kompan, like many other new playgrounds and play spaces. As a special feature, Mellunmäki Playground has an owl that functions as both a climbing frame and a slide, which has been seen before in new Kompan playgrounds abroad. The owl is the park's main attraction and an impressive one at that, and it seems to be very popular with children. We've already nicknamed the park the Owl Playground!

The new playground seems to have been in demand in the area, and many had already discovered it just a few days after completion. And it's no wonder – the whole setup is extremely functional and will expand further when the other end of the park is completed. The best features of Mellunmäki Playground are its forested, peaceful location with plenty of shaded areas – shaded playgrounds are rare in Helsinki. The playground was built around a forest theme and here you can meet an owl as well as at least a fox, hare, and bear. There are activities for children of various ages.

The park surrounding the Sibelius Monument has been undergoing major renovation for a long time and was still partly under construction at the time of writing. But in the second week of August 2024, the gates to the Sibelius Park playground at the edge of the park finally opened, and the renovated and updated playground once again welcomed children to play. And what a wonderful place it turned out to be!

For those looking for indoor activities and on rainy days, many museums in Helsinki and the surrounding area are excellent places to spend time and experience something new. Many museums have thoughtfully accommodated young visitors, and for example, you can move around with strollers and carriages in the exhibitions. Many museums also have quite functional care rooms as well as places to eat packed lunches.

Please note that many museums are closed on Mondays! However, not the Helsinki City Museum, Tram Museum, Merkki, TAHTO, and Amos Rex (Amos Rex is closed on Tuesdays).

Where can you find Helsinki's best picnic spot during the winter season? Warmth and light even during the dark times of year? Well, just north of Töölönlahti Bay, from the warmth of the Winter Garden beneath palm trees and banana plants! The Winter Garden is the city's hidden gem, and it's definitely worth visiting with children too!

The Winter Garden is always wonderful, and really perhaps one of Helsinki's most beautiful places. And since entry is free and it's almost always open (closed on Fridays when the plants and fish are tended to), it's easy to pop in multiple times or spend longer there. There's no café at the Winter Garden, so you can bring your own packed lunch, which you can enjoy at tables in the greenhouses while listening to the sound of the waterfall and admiring the garden's hundreds of plants. Kids especially love the carp swimming in the garden's pond and the large spiky cacti.

Helsinki's first themed playground opened in Ruoholahti in autumn 2024. The old playground courtyard was renovated while respecting its original design, and the Ruoholahti playground is now the world's first computer-themed playground. Pick-your-own sunflowers in the city's fields have started again! The Haltiala sunflower field is located along Kuninkaantammentie after Haltiala farm. In Tuomarinkylä, you can reach the sunflower field by driving to the end of Tuomarinkyläntie in front of the manor and walking from there to the end of the birch grove to the riverbank. The sunflowers are located between the Vantaa River and horse farms. Please note that the flowers are not located near the parking lot or car road. Walk only on light traffic routes and do not walk in the stable areas or horse farms.
On the Lasipalatsi square, in the environment of the Amos Rex museum hills, opened on Midsummer Eve Yinka Ilori's Transparent Happiness artwork, which emphasizes play, interaction and togetherness. You can bring your own basketball or table tennis rackets, as play is allowed in this work. Play equipment is also available for loan from the Amos Rex museum in exchange for collateral during opening hours. Free admission.
Museum passes to the Natural History Museum or admission tickets to Korkeasaari can also be borrowed from the library! From Viikki library you can borrow an admission ticket to the Natural History Museum. From Kalasatama library you can borrow an admission ticket to Korkeasaari zoo.

Töölönlahti's new summer park opened on July 18, 2024. The new summer park was created as a trial area based on residents' wishes for the upcoming renovation of Töölönlahti Park. If I understand correctly, the area is temporary and it has realized wishes and ideas from Helsinki residents: meadows, seating areas, a water play area, beach volleyball courts, and more nature in the heart of Helsinki. For years, the area has mainly had sparse grass and been full of geese, so this is definitely a huge improvement and leaves hope for an even better Töölönlahti Park. The park has fenced areas in many places, intended to keep geese away from the renovated park area.

Large blue-green algae blooms covered the Gulf of Finland in July-August 2018, and Helsinki's swimming beaches were mostly covered with toxic blue-green algae during July's heat waves, making swimming in the water not recommended. Kallahti Beach

Kallahti Beach located between Vuosaari and Meri-Rastila is excellent for small children.
Kallahti Point's beach extends very shallowly for a long distance, and the water is often warmer than other beaches as a result. However, watch out for sudden deep spots further along the beach! There's a kiosk-café, a large climbing ship as a playground, and public grills on the beach (bring your own charcoal). You can also enjoy snacks in the nearby forest sitting on tree trunks, avoiding the beach seagull problem. A magnificent natural spot and a lovely archipelago beach—a Helsinki gem! The surroundings offer easily accessible nature trails and stunning views. From the nearest bus stop, it's a few kilometers away, so unfortunately Kallahti is not easily accessible by public transport.

Museums Where Under 18s Get In Free

Media Museum Merkki (formerly the Newspaper Museum) has free admission for everyone.
Helsinki City Museum and Children's City on the side of Senate Square always have free admission for all ages.
Tram Museum in Töölö has free admission for everyone.
Ruiskumestarin House in Kruununkala can be visited for free.
Seurasaari Open-Air Museum has free admission for under 18s. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum opens again on 15.5.2025. You can freely explore Seurasaari year-round for free; there is only an admission fee for the museum buildings. Also remember Pukkisaari, halfway across the Seurasaari bridge!
National Museum has free admission for under 18s. The museum is closed for major renovations.
HAM Helsinki in Kamppi, under 18s get in free.
Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum has free admission for under 18s.
Ateneum has free admission for under 18s.
Design Museum on Korkeavuorenkatu has free admission for under 18s.
Amos Rex in Lasipalatsio offers art experiences free of charge for under 18s.
Hotel and Restaurant Museum at Kaapelitehdas has free admission for under 18s.

On the Lasipalasti square, in the surroundings of the Amos Rex museum hills, Yinka Ilori's Transparent Happiness artwork opened on Midsummer's Eve, emphasizing play, interaction, and togetherness. You can bring your own basketball or table tennis rackets, as play is encouraged in this artwork. Sports equipment is also available for loan from Amos Rex museum against a deposit during museum hours. Free admission.
You can also borrow a museum ticket to the Natural History Museum or entrance tickets to Korkeasaari from the library! From Viik Library you can borrow an entrance ticket to the Natural History Museum. From Kalasatama Library you can borrow an entrance ticket to Korkeasaari Zoo.

From the main guard, the parade proceeds along North Esplanade back to Senate Square, where the parade ends.

Helsinki's playground paddling pools will be filled again this summer in open playgrounds. Paddling pools can still be found in many Helsinki playgrounds and for example at the Swimming Stadium and Kumpula open-air swimming facilities. Little Helsinki received a wish list of paddling pools, and this article now contains an updated list for summer 2024.

Children's Traffic Town Summer 2025

Children's Traffic Town operations paused in August 2024 when construction work next to the traffic town interrupted activities. A new traffic park is scheduled to open in Rastila in autumn 2026. During the break, in summer 2025, children's traffic education will move to playgrounds and Tattarisuon motor hall.

Children's Traffic Town at Auroranportti 2 is out of service during the academic years 2024–2026 due to construction work in the area. According to current information, Helsinki's second Children's Traffic Town will open next to Rastila's camping area in autumn 2026 (not in 2025, as previously reported). Traffic Town operations are also planned to return to Auroranport, so in the future Helsinki will have two traffic parks. From Pienten Helsinki's perspective, it's good that Helsinki will get a second traffic town, but more than two years without activities feels wrong from children's perspective. In general, the amount of summer activities and events aimed at children has decreased year after year in Helsinki.

Rusthollari Play Park in Puotila opened after renovation in August 2024. Located in the middle of a residential area, just a short distance from Puotila metro station, the play park received a new play building through the renovation and the extensive outdoor area of the play park was updated.
However, it seems that a small fenced play area on the other side of the yard was left out of the renovation.

Seppä Playground in Punavuori has undergone a major renovation and the yard and new playground building opened for children on August 7, 2024. Located in the shadow of Agricola Church's tall tower, the playground is an excellent addition to the play facilities in the central area. And how wonderful that the renovation preserved the playground's old and beautiful trees!

The answer is Kruunuvuorenranta, a new neighborhood being built in Laajasalo, where a new small playground opened in late 2022. Kruunuvuorenranta's first playground is part of a sports park currently under construction in the area, which features, in addition to the playground, an artificial turf field and a skate and scooter park called SKUUM! Update: The sports park as a whole was completed in July 2023 and is now almost fully in use.

Hilleri Playground

Hilleri Playground's courtyard area has undergone a transformation! The renovated wooded courtyard is built around a garden theme and Hilleri now has its own vegetable garden! Take a virtual playground tour and see more photos of Hilleri Playground at the end of this article!

Hilleri Playground on Siilitie underwent a courtyard renovation in early 2023. The old courtyard had been in need of renovation for years, and the renovated courtyard is truly successful and respectful of the original design.

On Hilleri Playground's upper courtyard, there are familiar elements from Venynpuisto playground, but in a smaller size: the slope area is covered with rubber mulch, creating good conditions for climbing and the playground's slide. There is also the playground's water element, a water gauge, which was not in use at the time of our visit.

Like many other recently renovated Helsinki playgrounds and play areas, Hilleri's courtyard features mostly wooden playground equipment from Kompan. The courtyard is also divided into sections and at least one area is fenced. The playground is distinguished from others by its layered design and closeness to nature; here too, children of various ages have been considered.

The best aspects of Hilleri Playground are the wooded playground built around the garden theme, where spaces are divided among different activities. The playground also fits well into the landscape and the area is peaceful, with the surrounding park area providing additional space for the playground. There are also shady spots. Among the animals you can meet here are the playground's mascot, a wooden cloudberry sculpture, and clever ants.

The renovated Trumpetti Playground opened to children in June 2023, and the Pieni Helsinki team tested it out right away!

Located in Kannelmäki, the Trumpetti Playground's outdoor area still gleams with newness during our visit. The renovation work appears to be partly incomplete, judging by the tilt of at least one swing and possibly a carousel, but fortunately the rest of the playground looks great, and the warm summer evening has already attracted many children to this versatile playground. Despite its name, the Trumpetti Playground has not been built around a musical instrument theme, but rather features farm animals. Traces of the animals at the playground gates lead to wooden horses, pigs, cows, and sheep to climb on, swing from, slide down, and zoom along a thrilling cable slide. The Trumpetti Playground play area is fenced, and there is no separate area for younger children.

The long-awaited, Helsinki's newest gem Central Library Oodi opened its doors on 5.12.2018 and invited everyone from babies to grandparents to make the building their own. We had been looking forward to this event with the children for a long time, wondering about Oodi's roof windows being installed with a large crane during the summer heat, thinking about what kind of place it would be, and dreaming about everything Oodi would offer. Our first visit happened on a Friday evening, when the worst of the opening day crowds had passed and we were able to wonder at the gleaming new Oodi in peace.

"Giant water lilies can be found, but the princess and the frog are missing."

Right next to the Central Railway Station, in the middle of Kaisaniemi Park, you'll find an incredibly wonderful place that's absolutely worth visiting with children too. We visited Kaisaniemi Botanical Garden on a spring Saturday with my almost five-year-old museum buddy, since we've so often wondered about and admired the giant water lilies that even appear in the Hooray Helsinki! book. And we saw them!

Picnic at the Summit of Kruunuvuori

Kruunuvuori Villa Area in Laajasalo

The Kruunuvuori villa area is located in Kaitalahtipuisto in Laajasalo. The area gets its informal name from the wooden villas built in the early 20th century, unfortunately almost all of which have been destroyed. From the summit of Kruunuvuori, spectacular views open up to Suomenlinna, the city center and downtown skyline, Korkeasaari, Mustikkamaa, and numerous other islands and well-known landmarks.

The terrain is dense, overgrown, and unkempt deciduous forest with rocky ground, steep ascents, and ravines. The route is quite difficult to walk and for small children it's worth bringing a backpack carrier and leaving strollers at home. Due to the difficult terrain, the area cannot be recommended for those taking their first walks in the forest, but for small and large adventurers, Kruunuvuori is all the more fantastic a hiking destination. You can reach Kruunuvuorenranta by bus number 88 from Herttoniemi. A nice cycling route to the area runs from Herttoniemi along the shore through Tullisaari Park.

First Destination: Kruunuvuori Lake

We set our first goal to find a lake from the center of the villa area. We set out from Kaitalahti, following a fairly wide path from the end of the Main Road that led up a steep slope. At this point it was clear that strollers have no business here. The path winding through dense forest is occasionally rocky and at other times completely muddy in the forest, so rubber boots or water-resistant hiking boots are a good choice here, if not a requirement. After walking for a while, we came to a crossroads from which we could see the lake peeking through the trees in the autumn sun. The secret lake had been found!

When you've jumped in puddles so much that your boots are soaked through, you might be looking for something else to do on a rainy day. On the Little Helsinki list, rainy day joys include low-threshold activity ideas and places where you can easily pop in with the kids without big plans. Playground Vennyn Park

Oranssikuja / Kuninkaantammi Circle (by car), Kuninkaantammi, Helsinki
When arriving by car, it's worth heading straight to Kuninkaantammi Circle, where you can find some street parking (please note the area parking restrictions and only park in designated P spots). From Kuninkaantammi Circle it's a short walk to Vennyn Park.

At the beginning of 2021, a brand new and unique playground by Helsinki's standards opened next to Vennyn Park in the new Kuninkaantammi residential area, with climbing as the main feature. Vennyn Park has several different climbing routes with a very unusual design. In addition to climbing, Vennyn Park also has an area suitable for younger children and, judging by the structures, a water play area during the summer months. A special feature of the playground is an outdoor grilling area with picnic tables, so you can also visit here for a picnic with your own food. This park can also be recommended for older children. The overall setup is quite successful and different: we'd like to see more of these in Helsinki!

Vennyn Park is located on the Vantaa border in Kuninkaantammi and trunk line number 560 runs near the park. The playground itself is complete, but the neighboring park area was quite unfinished at least in spring 2021. The playground is not fenced.

Trains, airplanes, trams, ships, tractors, cranes… These and many other vehicles and machines can be spotted in Helsinki!

Trains

From Linnunlaulu Bridge opens a view of Helsinki Central Railway Station's railway yard, and all trains arriving and departing from the main railway station pass under this bridge. You may also see signals controlling train traffic and other equipment from the bridge. Linnunlaulu has a pleasant walking route and you can continue your journey to Töölönlahti or Hakaniemi playground.

Helsinki's marine areas have several different island destinations that you can reach by scheduled boat services during the summer season. Pientenhelsinki compiled Helsinki's island routes and island hopping on one page and offers tips on what you can experience on islands accessible by sea from Helsinki. Lahti has been the go-to destination for the Small Helsinki team for many summers: when it rains and is windy in Helsinki, the sun often shines in Lahti and it’s even pleasantly warm. Lahti has proven to be a charming city that offers plenty to see and do for children. The journey from Helsinki is conveniently covered not only by car but also by train, and many attractions, such as Lahti harbour and Launee Family Park, are within a reasonable walking distance from Lahti railway station. The city’s architecture also pleasantly surprised us.

Laurinniitty Playground

Laurinniitty Playground in Lassila, North Helsinki, underwent a complete outdoor renovation and reopened to children in 2020. The castle-themed play equipment, consisting mainly of wooden structures from Kompan company, is wonderful and inspires parents to play along too. Laurinniitty is a spacious play area, only partially fenced, and allows for different play zones grouped by age and skill level. The specialty of Laurinniitty is, in addition to the large climbing castle, a giant swing (adults can fit too!), smaller play castles, and a functional sandbox. Next to the park you'll find a separate, smaller and fenced playground that is used by the neighboring kindergarten on weekdays. The area is green and during summer heat, you'll find shaded play spots here as well.
You should definitely take a trip to Laurinniitty: the park has plenty to offer for both smaller and older children.

Lampi Playground

Lampi Playground in Kontula offers a completely unique playground adventure in Helsinki! This water-themed park is dominated by a large wooden climbing ship with a slide, along with various other, mostly wooden play equipment. The playground also features several other climbing and balancing structures. Lampi Playground may not be the best choice for the very youngest children, but older kids will find plenty to do and explore here. This playground is not fenced in.
The playground also has a large structure resembling a water pool, but from what I understand, this has not yet been filled even once due to restrictions, so its function and purpose remain a mystery. The renovation of Lampi Playground as a whole has been quite successful and unique: we would love to see more playgrounds like this in Helsinki.

Squirrel Playground

Squirrel Playground, formerly known as Herttoniemi Playground, reopened with renovated outdoor spaces in 2020 in Länsi-Herttoniemi. As part of the renovation, the playground area also expanded: the upper courtyard now features colorful and diverse play equipment designed especially for younger children. Sand diggers, a small climbing carousel, slides, swings, and a renovated paddling pool that also works great as a play arena. Behind the playground building is a refreshing new addition: various outdoor musical instruments. In the lower part of Squirrel Playground, below the slope and behind the fence, there's a rope climbing track, climbing structure, and carousel designed for older children.
The upper courtyard of Squirrel Playground is fenced and shaded at least partly by surrounding trees and bushes. A large park area nearby is perfect for picnics or a more relaxed visit. Squirrel Playground's location close to Herttoniemi metro station is one good reason to stop by for play, as it takes only about five minutes to walk from the metro station to the playground. Parking is often available near the playground.

To Espoo by Metro

Following HSL's zone reform, with an AB-zone ticket you can travel all the way to Matinkylä in Espoo, and there's plenty to see along the metro route. The new west metro stations are attractions in themselves, and much more is being built along the route, so even a little train-spotter will find plenty to marvel at.

Pieni Helsinki is launching a new city tourism concept as restaurant management student Heidi Säynätkari creates city walks for families in Helsinki neighborhoods as her final project.

Located a short tram ride from Helsinki's city center, Ruskeasuo offers green parks, lovely cafes, and the chance to see horses. You can reach it by trams 10 and 3, as well as any buses running along Mannerheimintie.

Stay at the charming Myö Hostel, where you can prepare your own breakfast or enjoy morning coffee at the trendy Cafe Bon Temps, then explore the Central Park and visit the horses. If hunger strikes, enjoy a delicious lunch at Cafe Blanka, and after a pleasant walk, you can visit a beautiful cottage garden. Dinner tastes wonderful at the traditional White Lady, where children are especially well looked after.

In the hallway, museum visitors are greeted by a large tarantula and poison spiders live in the building's structures. Now we're in a truly exciting place!

There is much to wonder about at the Museum of Natural History.

The University of Helsinki's Museum of Natural History in Etu-Töölö underwent a complete renovation a few years ago and is now an extremely impressive and interesting whole. Although the themes have remained largely the same, the new look presents the collection even better and more interestingly. The renovation has also brought additional functionality and children are well considered here. The Museum of Natural History operates together with other LUOMUS sites: the Kaisaniemi and Kumpula botanical gardens and the Museum of Natural History together form the Central Museum of Natural Sciences.
